Socialize with Me Sunday til Monday Link Party

Simpsonized CraftsThis is my first real go of a link party. In the past I’ve tried to stay updated with these things but I get so distracted and well I just don’t post regularly enough to participate. Lucky I have Kelly and Michelle (my two blog mentors) to push me into consistent blogging.

I found this really neat Link Party from Simpsonized Crafts and Then Some and thought ‘How cool. I can participate any day for a whole week’.  All you need to do to participate is write a crafty post and share.

For Today I will Share a Magic Yarn Ball Craft.
yarnswap3

Supplies:

  • Yarn
  • little trinkets (gifts)
  1. Using something round or the largest item you will include, start the yarn ball by wrapping yarn around it. (in this example I used the Fairy Fabric Panel rolled up as my center)
  2. Keep wrapping the yarn around and around and every so often add another little trinket.
  3. When you get to the end of yarn wrap up the entire ‘Magic Yarn Ball’ and give as a special gift to a friend.

Ideas for what to include in your Magic Yarn Ball:

  • ribbon
  • buttons
  • fabric (I used fabric because my swap partner was into making small quilts for foster kids)
  • pencils
  • erasers
  • hankies
  • key chains
  • stitch marker
  • stickers
  • rubber stamp
  • rings
  • hair accessories (rubber bands or barrettes)
  • earrings

The most important thing to remember is you want the trinkets to surprise the receiver – in my case I included things for scrap booking and quilting as my swap partner enjoys those activities. If I were making one for a Crocheter or Knitter I’d include things that would interest them.

Teach Your Child to Crochet Lesson #2

Today we will be learning how to make a Single Crochet Stitch. You can start to make hats, dish cloths and coasters with this stitch.

Supplies:
yarn – bulky yarn
Crochet Hook – size J or larger

How to Crochet a Single Crochet Stitch:

So far you have learned to make a Foundation Chain and now a Single Crochet Stitch.

Things You can Make Using Single Crochet:

  • scarf
  • head band
  • bracelet
  • necklace
  • patchwork afghan
  • belt
  • hat

How did you do? Why not try and make a simple wash cloth?

Just make a foundation chain about 16 and then single crochet in the 3rd chain from the hook. Now single crochet in each stitch across. When you get to the last chain, single crochet, then chain 1 (gives you height for your next row) and turn. Start all over for the next row and repeat until you have about 15 rows.

Make a Corn Husk Doll

One year our family visited Down town Sacramento’s Pioneer Days.

It was a fun time as the presenters dressed in period clothing and presented old school crafts like spinning yarn, churning butter, and making corn husk dolls.

Corn Husk Dolls are super easy to make and you can even sneak in a bit of a history lesson.

You can find a complete How To Tutorial on E-How.com

Have you ever made a Corn Husk Doll?
